Books We Are Reading.

The Open Table Ministry book club began in July of 2020. We have read numerous books to explore the underlying, systemic causes of inequity and homelessness. In our pursuit to create a space to better understand homelessness and poverty, we have explored topics such as the criminal justice system, foster care, addiction and treatment, the private housing market, racism, Durham’s racial history, and much more! Want to learn more? We suggest you start with something off of our book list!

Books we recommend:

  • Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond

  • Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company That Addicted America by Beth Macy

  • Caste: The Origins of our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson

  • Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Brian Stevenson

  • The Best of Enemies: Race and Redemption in the New South by Osha Gray Davidson

  • To the End of June: The Intimate Life of American Foster Care by Cris Beam

  • Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America by Barbara Ehrenreich
