Open Table Ministry Welcomes the New Year with Gratitude & Urgency

A word from our Executive Director, Drew Woten

As we step into the new year, Open Table Ministry is filled with deep gratitude and a renewed sense of urgency. Reflecting on the past year, we are in awe of the generosity and unwavering support we’ve received from our incredible community of donors, volunteers, and sustainers. Together, we’ve made tremendous strides in supporting our unsheltered neighbors — but there is still so much more to do.

Our 15th Annual “Walk in Their Shoes” fundraiser was our most successful event to date, a testament to the commitment of so many in our community who are dedicated to addressing homelessness. At the same time, 2024 was another year of welcoming dedicated and faithful volunteers who helped us provide essential services to those in need. Their engagement, passion, and time have made a direct impact on the lives of our unsheltered neighbors, and we couldn’t be more grateful.

But as we celebrate these successes, we are also acutely aware of the growing challenges we face. Homelessness continues to rise in Durham (and across the country), and the need for expanded services is critical. As winter settles in, the lack of daytime shelters forces many vulnerable individuals to endure hours in the elements, often without a safe place to turn. We need more alternatives—spaces that are equipped to meet the diverse needs of those who have nowhere else to go. From unsheltered individuals with chronic health conditions to those struggling with mental health challenges, Durham deserves creative, compassionate, and innovative solutions.

Two things can be true at the same time: we are deeply thankful for all that has been accomplished, and we are equally aware of the urgency of the work that lies ahead. This year, we’re committed to bringing forth new ideas, new partnerships, and new programs that can meet the growing demands of our unsheltered community.

Here are some of the critical projects we’d like to see implemented in Durham to address the challenges our unsheltered neighbors face:

  1. Daytime Center for Respite and Support: A safe, welcoming space where individuals can escape the elements during the day, access essential services, and get connected to mainstream resources like healthcare, housing, and employment.

  2. Alternative Shelters for High-Need Individuals: A shelter model designed to serve individuals with complex needs, such as those with chronic health issues, mental health challenges, or disabilities. This would provide a dignified, supportive environment where people can access the care they need without the risks and limitations of traditional congregate shelters.

  3. Additional Shelter for Families with Children: As the number of families with children experiencing homelessness rises, we urgently need safe, family-friendly emergency shelters that can provide not just a roof, but supportive services that keep families together and help them regain stability.

  4. Safe Sleeping Sites for Vehicles and Tents: A designated space where individuals can park their vehicles or pitch a tent in a safe, supervised environment. These sites would offer access to quality resources such as hygiene facilities, food, and case management, helping people transition toward more stable housing.

At Open Table Ministry, we believe that compassion and innovation go hand-in-hand. We know that Durham—our community—is ready for solutions that are not only effective but also compassionate and forward-thinking. We are proud to be a part of this vibrant city, and we are excited to continue our work alongside our volunteers, donors, and partners as we tackle the complex issue of homelessness.

With gratitude,
Drew Woten
